Thus, praying about whether the Book of Mormon is true does not imply that the Mormon Church is true. Since the FLDS also believe in the Book of Mormon, as well as a total of 20+ Mormon splinter groups. They all believe in the divinity of the Book of Mormon.

A total of 83 churches have come into existence in Mormonism since April 6, 1830.

About half of them no longer exist today.

There is no doubt that Joseph Smith possessed a so-calledseer stone and made use of it. The belief in magical or psychic abilities of such a stone was widespread in Smith's time. Joseph Smith found his seer stone while digging a well with one of his brothers (BH Roberts, A Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Vol. 1, p. 129).
Not only did he use it to search for treasure on behalf of Josiah Stowel, but later he used the stone primarily to "translate" the Book of Mormon by throwing the stone into a hat and then burying his face in it. Also in his Book of Mormon seers and seer stones have a special meaning.
Emma Smith, his wife, later passed the seer stone, which Smith appears to have used, to her relatives. It can be viewed today at the Wilford Wood Museum, Woods Cross, Utah. Smith may well have owned more than one of these stones, however, since the Mormon Church also claims to have Joseph Smith's seer stone.
The seer stone was often mistakenly confused with the so-called Urim and Thummim. However, both are different things.

So the translation was done with a seer stone in the hat instead of the Urim and Thumin. Some of the golden plates were not even used for translation. Urim and Thumin were not used in the scriptures for translation but for decision making.

Portions of the Book of Mormon contain passages that resemble word for word passages in the 1769 edition of the King James Bible. In this edition of the King James Bible there are words in italics. These italicized words were added by the authors to make poetic English more readable in the 17th century. They have been italicized to let the reader know that they are not part of the actual translation from source. The Book of Mormon is said to be a translation of an ancient text. Why do these words, added to the King James Bible in the 17th century, appear one-to-one in the Book of Mormon?

The 1769 edition of the King James Bible, the edition Joseph Smith owned, contained errors that were corrected in later editions of the King James Version. Why were these specific errors repeated in the Book of Mormon?

 

Joseph Smith translated the Mormon version of the Bible, here he claims to have corrected the erroneous translation of the Bible. Why, then, do the Book of Mormon passages correspond to the "incorrect" KJV 1769 Bible rather than the LDS Bible?

 

The King James Bible (1769) contains unique translation errors found in the Book of Mormon, meaning that the Book of Mormon used the King James Bible as a source. Some examples are 2 Nephi 19:1, 2 Nephi 21:3, and 2 Nephi 16:2. In addition, the Book of Mormon in 2 Nephi 23:21-22 refers to "dragons" and "satyrs" (goat-footed creatures, demons) consistent with the King James Version, while modern Bible translations do not include these mythological beasts.

 

The Book of Mormon also quotes Isaiah 7, specifically: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." (2 Nephi 17:14). Some Bible scholars believe this to be a mistranslation of the Hebrew Bible in the King James Version, since the Hebrew word for "virgin" is "bethulah" while Isaiah used the word "almah", meaning "young woman". However, the Septuagint uses the word "parthenos", almost always translated as "virgin," which is also used at Matthew 1:22-23.

There are several versions of the Book of Mormon in the Mormon Church. (Especially in English)

Which one is correct? Why does the Book of Mormon need constant correction or change when it is the most correct book on earth?

The first edition of 1830 included a Trinitarian theology. Many passages that united the identities of father and son were later changed as part of over 100,000 changes since the first edition. For example:

1 Nephi 3 (page 32): “The last records . . . shall make it known to every kindred, tongue, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Eternal Father, and the Redeemer of the world” was changed to:

"The last records ... shall make known to every kindred, tongue, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father, and the Redeemer of the world"

 

However, there are still some parts in the Book of Mormon that establish the same identity of father and son. For example: Ether 3:14-15:

"14  Behold, it is I who from the foundation of the world was prepared to redeem my people. Behold, I am Jesus Christ. I am the Father and the Son. In me all become men have life, and that forever, even those that shall believe on my name; and they shall be my sons and my daughters.

15  And I have never shown myself to a man whom I have created, for no man has ever believed in me as you have. Do you see that you were created in my own image? Yes, even all men were created in my own image from the beginning."

The changes in later editions show an evolving theology of deity away from the traditional Trinitarian view. Thus, in some places, like that in Ether, a contradictory view of the ontology of deity emerges.

The original title page of the 1830 Version said that Joseph Smith was the "Author and proprietor" of the Book of Mormon. Now it says only translated by Joseph Smith.

View of the Hebrews is an 1823 book by Ethan Smith (no relation to Joseph), a US Congregationalist minister, who argues that Native Americans descended from the ten lost tribes of Israel. This was a common view during the early nineteenth century when most Europeans and Americans had only a biblical view of history. Numerous commentators on Mormon history, from General Authority BH Roberts to Joseph Smith biographer Fawn M. Brodie, have noted similarities in the content of View of the Hebrews and the Book of Mormon, first published in 1830, seven years later Ethan Smith's book.

However, it is unclear whether Joseph Smith had access to this book while he was translating the Book of Mormon.

The lost 116 pages

According to Church history, Martin Harris served as Joseph Smith's scribe from April 12 to June 14, 1828. Harris kept pestering Smith with requests to show the manuscript to some of his relatives and friends. Smith finally agreed and so Harris took the 116 pages of the previous translation with him. The pages were then stolen or destroyed. Joseph Smith is said to have been temporarily deprived of the gift of translation, and Martin Harris was never allowed to scribe again.

The Prophet then received a revelation in the summer of 1828 in which the Lord revealed the apparent motive of the thieves. (Doctrine and Covenants: 10) It was therefore the intention to wait until the Prophet made another translation and if that were the same then the first would be altered to provide evidence against Smith. The translation of the same period was then no longer made from the same plates (thelarge plates of Nephi), but from the small plates of Nephi, which Nephi once made “with a wise purpose” unknown to himself.

Several points seem questionable about this story:

  • The stolen manuscript was in the handwriting of Martin Harris. If someone had made a change, it would have been easy to see in the handwriting. No one would have taken them seriously then, knowing that Harris was a writer.

  • People of the time would probably have been more interested in obtaining proof of Smith's claims than in converting real evidence into its opposite. Especially since it was believed to be a repetition of the divine gift (D&C 10:16–17). The attempt to hide a plan of Satan behind it seems rather clumsy.

 

  • Is it realistic to assume that God would actually go to such lengths because of the 116 pages? It must be realized that with all the hardship and many responsibilities of the new life, Nephi had to make a second set of plates to prepare another record that would be carried and passed down through the generations . Wouldn't there have been a simpler way? Wouldn't God just have the power to protect the 116 pages, just as he protected the gold plates?

The whole thing seems very suspect and begs the question whether Joseph Smith simply didn't just get into trouble after the 116 pages disappeared and then came up with such an explanation himself? The reader may decide for himself.

There is absolutely no archaeological evidence directly supporting the Book of Mormon or the Nephites/Lamanites numbered in the millions. This is one of theReasons why unofficial apologists use the limited geography model (in Centralor South America happened) came up. And that the real Hill Cumorah is not in Palmyra, New York, but elsewhere and possibly somewhere down there in South America. This is in direct contradiction to what Joseph Smith and other prophets taught. The Church also has a Visitor Center in New York and holds annual Hill Cumorah Festivals.

Animals in the Book of Mormon

Horses and chariots are mentioned, which, according to current, generally accepted knowledge, did not exist on the American continent before the time of Columbus (until 1492).

According to apologists, other animals were meant:

 

The horses were actually tapirs, cattle and cattle were actually mountain goats, llamas or the ancestors of bison. Sheep probably also meant llamas.

Goats probably meant deer and deer. Pigs actually meant peccaries, but they were never tamed by humans.

The geographical conditions described in the Book of Mormon could not be clearly assigned to today's geography, which is why Mormon cannot be given a place of birth or a place of death that can be localized on today's maps. Book of Mormon critics therefore believe that Joseph Smith copied names such as Moroni and Cumorah from old 19th-century maps into the Book of Mormon; so isMoronithe largest city and today also the capital of the archipelagoComoros. There have been numerous unconvincing attempts to locate geographically and historically the places and events described in the Book of Mormon.

By the way, the island of Comoros and the city of Moroni were known from the stories of Captain Kidd. The stories of Captain Kidd were well known among treasure hunters of the time.

Joseph Smith was a treasure hunter and fan of pirate stories. A contemporary source reports that young Smith was a fan of the Captain William Kid Pirate novels, where some of these stories are set in Comoros ("Camorah" in English) and Moroni. The name "Camorah" appeared in the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon, but the spelling was later changed.

 

Problems with verses in the Book of Mormon

2 Nephi 5:15–16

15  And I taught my people to build buildings, and to work every kind of wood, and also iron, and copper, and brass, and steel, and gold, and silver, and precious ores, which were abundant.

16  And I, Nephi, built a temple; and I built it after the pattern of Solomon's temple, except that it was not built of so many precious things; for these were not to be found in the land, therefore it could not be built like Solomon's temple. But the structure was like Solomon's temple, and the work on it was most painstaking.

 

Two verses, side by side, in direct and complete contradiction to each other. But let's dig a little deeper: steel was plentiful in the country, but steel itself was not available at all in the country as it is a mixture of carbon and iron. Okay you say, but he meant there was an abundance of iron and carbon to make steel. Okay, except that the knowledge of steelmaking didn't exist in that region by the time Nephi left Jerusalem.

He would have no source of possible knowledge of steelmaking and no knowledge of the material itself. Okay say God told him so. That's all well and good, but who told the boys back in Jerusalem how Laban's sword is made?

 

But let's put that aside and just focus on the temple itself. Nephi built a temple, fellow. If he didn't build a miniature model, then he needed help. Let's assume he had the support of everyone who followed him away from Laman and Lemuel. How fast could the population have grown in that time? We'll start with a handful of people with a typical lifespan. So, at best, Nephi and those who went with him might have some youth to support them. Are we generous and say he has 30 people in total who were able to help. How long would it take 30 people to build a temple? The Salt Lake Temple took over 40 years and involved more than 30 people with much better equipment.

 

But he didn't just build any temple, he built a replica of Solomon's temple. How long did that take? In 1 Kings 6:38 we learn that it took seven years. I think that means Nephi would be able to complete his replica in less than 40 years because "the construction was like Solomon's temple".

But wait, what is this? In 2 Chronicles 2 it says:

“And Solomon numbered seventy thousand that were carrying burdens, and eighty thousand that were cutting stones on the mountain, and three thousand six hundred overseers over them.”

 

So that's 70,000 guys carrying materials, 80,000 whocutting stones, and 3,600 in middle management. This is quite a challenge for Nephi, who built a temple like Solomon's in his lifetime, if it took Solomon's 153,600 men about seven years. So Nephi either built Solomon's Temple Model as a hobby, or we have a serious problem in just two verses.

The Book of Mormon Witnesses

There is no document with the signatures of the witnesses.

What comes closest are the original documents of the print manuscript written by Oliver Cowdery. The names of the 8 witnesses were handwritten signed by Oliver Cowdery.
